SOUTHERN EXPRESS CO EARLY WAX SEALER-RARE MAKER
This wax sealer was made for the Southern Express Company. The company was formed in 1861 by the Adams Express Company to do business in the South during the Civil War. This sealer is marked “Southern Express Co.” with the number “9” in the center. It has the die maker’s mark on the top of the head “G.R. Lyman Lynchburg” (Virginia). I believe that is an early and rare mark. I was able to find that Mr. Lyman served in the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War. The sealer has a nice turned wood handle, which along with the maker and the low number suggests to me that this is an early Southern Express sealer. It is in excellent condition.
